Step by step towards success
Here, we present a few of the milestones we have passed on our journey from a small manufacturing operation for watch components to one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microbatteries.
Milestones
1952
The company is founded by Kurt Zehntner to manufacture watch components. Precision and reliability have been central to Renata since its foundation. At the start, Renata employees make high-precision, fine-tuned balance wheels intended for use in mechanical clocks.
1963
In 1963, Renata becomes part of ASUAG (Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG). ASUAG was a merger of independent Swiss watch and component companies. ASUAG allowed the companies involved to set prices together and limit exports, reducing competition and increasing the profitability of the sector. ASUAG was founded in 1931. In the 1970s, it became the world’s largest manufacturer of clock movements and components.
1974
In 1974, Renata begins research works leading to the creation of the first Renata button cells. What sounds easy today was greatly challenging back then. Among other things, the composition of the product, its structure and means of production needed to be defined and worked out. The electrochemical findings laid out in the technical literature were wholly insufficient. Luckily, Renata was able to rely on its experience and knowledge in the field of micromechanics.
1982
In 1982, Renata becomes part of the Swatch Group as a 100% subsidiary. Swatch Group arose from the fusion of the two largest Swiss watchmaking groups, the Allg. Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG (ASUAG) and the Société suisse pour l'industrie horlogère (SSIH).
1983
In 1983, Renata produces the first 3V lithium button cell. These lithium batteries are characterised by their low self-discharge, broad temperature range and high pulsing load capability. This means they fulfil the highest requirements where quality and reliability are concerned.
1994
In 1994, Renata begins producing its own zinc-air batteries. These batteries have a long running life thanks to their high, even voltage supply and are ideal for hearing aids.
1998
In 1998, Renata produces the first lithium ion batteries (LiPos). These are the first rechargeable batteries that are produced by Renata itself. This extends the portfolio from primary to secondary microbatteries.
2001 - 2005
A time of growth! Around the turn of the millennium, Renata opens several subsidiaries worldwide. Renata has a presence in the USA, China, Italy, France and Germany.
2010
In 2010, Renata introduces its first “0% mercury” product range. Renata developed the 0% mercury range in close collaboration with the Swiss watch industry. The new batteries are tested by various independent laboratories and approved by several important OEM customers. Most well-known luxury brands in the Swiss watchmaking sector use Renata products.
2014
In 2014, the rechargeable lithium button cell is introduced to our range. The rechargeable lithium battery is marked by high capacity and durability across its entire life cycle.
2015
In 2015, Renata introduces its first child-safe packaging for lithium batteries. In doing so, we live up to our sense of great social responsibility, becoming one of the first battery manufacturers to introduce child-safe packaging.
2017
In 2017, Renata launches a particularly flexible product on the market – our thin-film batteries. These are ultra-thin (0.4 mm) and are particularly suitable for wearables.
